Students learn best when they are engaged. In our fourth grade in Manara STEM Academy, students are learning math, science, history, literature, technology, and art through one extensive study. It’s hard to say what they are learning and when, because it’s all integrated into a project of designing and implementing a garden just outside our school grounds.
Students are working with a professional architect, who teaches students the importance of math in cost allocations, measurements, drawing to scale as well as the science of growing gardens. Students further their research by searching the internet, reviewing historical gardens, creating electronic collaborative workspaces and apply what they learn. They work closely with the community to raise funds to apply what they have learned.
